Glossary What does decarbonisation mean?
Decarbonisation
In general, decarbonisation refers to the strategy with which companies want to achieve a low-carbon economy. This refers to the omission or reduction of the use of carbon-generating technologies in order to reduce the man-made proportion of greenhouse gases in the air.
Decarbonisation strategies include avoiding and reducing emissions by using more efficient technologies, substituting greenhouse gas-intensive activities (e.g. fossil fuels vs. renewable energies), the use of actively separated emission technologies (see negative emission technologies), the promotion of compensation for unavoidable emissions through CO₂ reductions (see CO₂ sink).
