28 October 2020 – the launch of klimaVest
28 October 2020: fund inception and launch of KlimaVest
Long before advice on sustainability preferences became mandatory (since 2 August 2022), Commerz Real launched a product that not only aims to contribute to protecting the climate, but also promises a return of 3 to 4 percent p.a. The goal is to build up a portfolio of renewable energy generation, sustainable infrastructure, mobility and forestry assets of a total value of at least 25 billion euros over a term of at least 50 years.
2020 – the first purchases are made
klimaVest portfolio: Tordesillas solar power plant, Spain
A solar farm in Tordesillas, in the northern Spanish province of Valladolid, kicked off the event. In the first year after the grid connection planned for January 2021, it is expected to produce more than 74 gigawatt-hours of solar energy and cover the average demand of 18,800 Spanish households. The international project developer and service provider BayWa r.e. is responsible for on-site operation and maintenance, while Statkraft Markets GmbH signed an electricity supply contract for the first ten years. The portfolio is growing rapidly. Commerz Real acquires the Heinsberg wind farm in the Münster region from Bremer Energiekontor AG.
klimaVest portfolio: Heinsberg wind farm, Germany
With a rated output of 7.3 megawatts and an annual electricity output of around 18.7 million kilowatt-hours, it can meet the electricity requirements of almost 4,600 German households.
Bigger, more effective, more international – klimaVest continues to develop further. Two new wind farms have already been commissioned in the Brandenburg municipalities of Langenrieth (117 kilometres south of Berlin) and Freiwalde (66 kilometres south of Berlin) as well as a solar park in Spain. The seller is a leading German energy park developer: the UKA Group, headquartered in Meissen, Saxony.
The year 2021 – acquisitions, digital application route, awards

Commerz Real secured for klimaVest 49.9 percent of the shares in the 14 onshore wind farms with a total of 47 wind turbines from EnBW Baden-Württemberg AG in one go. Distributed across Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, the plants cover the needs of more than 100,000 German three-person households with around 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity generated.
As part of a renewed commitment in Spain, Commerz Real acquired three further solar parks for klimaVest. The total rated output of 131 megawatt peak (MWp) corresponds to an annual electricity production of 230,506 megawatt-hours (MWh) and would cover the average demand of around 74,000 households.
klimaVest portfolio: Kuuronkallio wind farm, Finland
From 6 June 2021, you can subscribe to the klimaVest ELTIF (European Long-Term Investment Fund) completely digitally, making it convenient to participate in the progress of the energy transition. Bookings to custody accounts can be made through all major banks, savings banks and investment platforms.
Commerz Real acquires the first Finnish asset for klimaVest with the Kuuronkallio onshore wind farm. The wind farm, which was connected to the grid at the beginning of 2020, comprises 14 turbines with a rated output of 58.8 megawatts. This corresponds to around 216 gigawatt-hours of electricity produced annually. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this covers the average demand of just under 70,000 households.
Our excellence awarded by: Scope Analysis and Morgen & Morgen
The preliminary rating of a+ by Scope Analysis on 16 August 2021 is due to the short term of the fund. Scope gives the financial structure of klimaVest a good rating, as it is low-risk according to analysts and achieves a low debt financing ratio. Just a few months later, in November, two awards in a row followed.
With the “Sustainable Award in Finance”, the initiators – Morgen & Morgen and Bankmagazin, ECCO Works and Zielke Research Consult GmbH – aim to anchor the topic of sustainability even more firmly in society and thus create more orientation with regard to sustainability in the financial sector.

Happy Birthday klimaVest – December 2022 is the date!
klimaVest target: achievement of the 1 billion euro fund volume
There is every indication that we will reach or exceed the 1 billion euro mark in fund volume by December of this year. This is fantastic because this capital opens up further opportunities for us, as well as our investors, to invest in a long-term vision: a climate-neutral European Union. Every solar park and wind farm that we acquire and operate in the long term, increases the share of renewable energies in Europe’s energy mix.
